sedimentation rate (SR) [L, sedimentum + ratum, rate] , the settling rate of red blood cells in a vertical column of anticoagulated whole blood. It is used to monitor inflammatory or malignant disease and to aid in the detection and diagnosis of inflammatory diseases, such as tuberculosis. The test is nonspecific and often unreliable.
