scleredema /sklir′ədē″mə/ [Gk, skleros + oidema, swelling] , an idiopathic skin disease characterized by nonpitting induration beginning on the face or neck and spreading downward over the body, sparing the hands and feet. There also may be tongue swelling, restriction of eye movements, and pericardial, pleural, and peritoneal effusions. Resolution occurs after several months, but recurrences are common. The condition often follows a streptococcal infection or an exanthem of childhood. There is no specific treatment. Compare scleroderma.
