scaphoid bone [Gk, skaphe + eidos, form; AS, ban] , either of two similar proximal boat-shaped bones of the hand and the foot. The scaphoid bone of the hand is slanted at the radial side of the carpus and articulates with the radius, trapezium, trapezoideum, capitate, and lunate bones. The scaphoid bone of the foot is located at the medial side of the tarsus between the talus and cuneiform bones and articulates with the talus, the three cuneiform bones, and occasionally the cuboid bone.
