rotavirus gastroenteritis, viral gastroenteritis caused by a rotavirus infection, one of the most common causes of diarrhea in the United States. The virus is usually ingested in contaminated food or water. Young children are particularly susceptible and can suffer severe dehydration or even death. The availability of a vaccine has dramaticlly reduced the incidence of diarrhea associated with rotovirus infection.
