ritual circumcision, a surgical procedure for removing the prepuce of the male in Jewish communities or the labia minora of the female in Muslim communities as a religious rite. In Jewish families the male circumcision is usually performed on the eighth day after birth. The practice dates back to the ancient Egyptians, and in some societies it is a prerequisite for marriage.
