restless legs syndrome [AS, restlaes + ONorse, leggr] , a benign condition of unknown origin characterized by an irritating sensation of uneasiness, tiredness, and itching deep within the muscles of the leg, especially the lower part of the limb, and accompanied by twitching and sometimes by pain. The only relief is walking or moving the legs. The condition may be associated with various psychiatric disorders, probably as a form of extrapyramidal hyperkinesis. Also called anxietas tibiarum, Ekbom’s syndrome, Wittmaack-Ekbom syndrome.
