radiopharmacist

radiopharmacist /-fär″məsist/ , a person responsible for formulating and dispensing prescribed radioactive tracers and for the clinical aspects of radiopharmacy. Radiopharmacists are required to receive training in radioactive tracer techniques, the safe handling of radioactive materials, the preparation and quality control of drugs for administration to humans, and the basic principles of nuclear medicine. Institutional, state, and federal regulations require completion of a program in nuclear pharmacy, including coursework in radiation safety, radiopharmacy techniques, health physics, and instrumentation. Some jurisdictions require licensure as a pharmacist.
