psychic blindness [Gk, psyche, mind; AS, blind] , a somatoform disorder that is manifested by the total or partial loss of vision in eyes that are organically normal. Despite the symptoms claimed, the patient usually reacts to light and avoids objects that might cause injury. The condition is frequently the result of an inner conflict or psychological stress, such as an unconscious effort to avoid a threatening or guilt-inducing situation. See also conversion disorder.
