protriptyline hydrochloride /-trip″tilēn/ , a tricyclic antidepressant. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of endogenous depression marked by withdrawal and anergy. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Concomitant administration of monoamine oxidase inhibitors, recent myocardial infarction, or known hypersensitivity to any tricyclic medication prohibits its use. It is used with caution when anticholinergics are contraindicated, in seizure disorders, and in cardiovascular disease. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are sedation and anticholinergic side effects. A variety of GI, cardiovascular, and neurological reactions may occur. It interacts with many other drugs.
