prokaryon

prokaryon /prōker″ē·on/ [Gk, protos + karyon, nut] , a region within a bacterial cell that contains most of the bacterial DNA. It is not separated from the rest of the cell by a membrane. Also spelled procaryon. Compare eukaryon.
