progressive bulbar palsy

progressive bulbar palsy [L, progredi, to advance] , a motor neuron disease affecting the brainstem, characterized by weakness of the laryngeal, pharyngeal, tongue, and facial muscles. The patient experiences progressive dysarthria and dysphagia. The muscular weaknesses increase the risk for choking and aspiration pneumonia. Emotional lability is a component of the disease. Also called progressive bulbar atrophy.
