primaquine phosphate /prī″məkwin/ , an antimalarial. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of malaria and prevention of relapse during recovery from the disease; it eradicates the tissue schizonts of Plasmodium vivax and P. ovale infections. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, concomitant use of bone marrow depressants or hemolytic drugs, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. It must be used with caution in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are hemolytic anemia, agranulocytosis, and abdominal distress.
