preparatory prosthesis

preparatory prosthesis /prep″ərətôr′ē/ , a temporary artificial limb that is fitted to the stump soon after amputation. It permits ambulation and biomechanical adaptation during the first several weeks after surgery. A rigid removable dressing is usually applied, which allows for inspection of the stump for signs of hemorrhage or tissue deterioration before a permanent or definitive prosthesis is fitted. Also called temporary prosthesis.
