prenatal cocaine exposure

prenatal cocaine exposure, exposure to cocaine in utero, which can cause birth defects and long-range health problems. Contributing causes may include poor sperm quality of a male cocaine user, poor nutritional habits and/or alcohol or tobacco abuse by the mother during pregnancy, or the direct effect of the drug itself, which can cross the placental barrier. See also neonatal abstinence syndrome.
