prazepam /praz″əpam/ , a benzodiazepine derivative used to treat anxiety. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is not available in the United States, but it is prescribed elsewhere for the treatment of anxiety disorders or the short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety and has several unlabeled uses, including alcohol and opiate withdrawal, spasticity, and partial seizures. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Acute narrow-angle glaucoma or known sensitivity to this drug or other benzodiazepines prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious, but rare, adverse effects are confusion, tremor, palpitations, and diaphoresis.
