pneumoencephalography

pneumoencephalography /no̅o̅′mō·ensef′əlog″rəfē/ [Gk, pneuma, air, enkephalos, brain, graphein, to record] , a procedure for the radiographic visualization of the ventricular space, basal cisterns, and subarachnoid space overlying the cerebral hemispheres of the brain. Air, helium, or oxygen is injected into the lumbar subarachnoid space after the intermittent removal of the cerebrospinal fluid by lumbar puncture. See also encephalography, ventriculography.
