pit and fissure cavity [AS, pytt + L, fissura, cleft, cavum, cavity] , a cavity or area of decay that starts in a tiny groove or fault in tooth enamel, usually on an occlusal surface of a molar or premolar. In the classification of caries, it represents class I caries.
