phlegmonous gastritis /fleg″mənəs/ [Gk, phlegmone + osis, condition] , a rare but severe form of gastritis involving the connective tissue layer of the stomach wall. It occurs as a complication of systemic infection, peptic ulcer, cancer, surgery, or other severe stress and represents an acute abdominal emergency. Treatment includes surgery, antibiotics, and analgesics.
