perfluorocarbon

perfluorocarbon /pərflo͝or′ōkär″bən/ , any of a group of chemicals with limited capacity for transporting oxygen through the circulatory system. They can be used for certain blood substitute purposes, regardless of the blood type of the patient. They are stable at room temperatures, have a pH of 7.4, and are free of infectious pathogens. Also called artificial blood, blood substitute.
