passion flower, an herbal product derived from a perennial climbing vine that is native to tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas and is also found in the southeastern United States. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is used orally for the treatment of insomnia and restlessness and gastrointestinal disturbances associated with nervousness. It is used topically for the treatment of hemorrhoids, burns, and inflammation. Other traditional uses include treatment of menopause, pain, palpitations, arrhythmias, and hypertension. It may be effective in relieving nervousness; there are insufficient reliable data regarding its effectiveness for other indications. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: It should not be used during pregnancy and lactation, in children, or in those with known hypersensitivity.
