paradoxic breathing

paradoxic breathing [Gk, paradoxos + AS, braeth] , a condition in which a part of the lung deflates during inspiration and inflates during expiration. The condition usually is associated with a chest trauma, such as an open chest wound or rib cage damage as in flail chest. In such cases the condition is sometimes called internal paradoxic breathing. External paradoxic breathing may be observed during deep general anesthesia.
