palmitic acid (CH₃(CH₂)₁₄COOH) /palmit″ik/ [L, palma] , a saturated fatty acid that commonly occurs in animal and vegetable fats and oils. It is a carboxylic acid used in the production of soaps and candles. Also called hexadecanoic acid.
