overactive bladder, a condition characterized by a nearly constant urge to urinate. Also called irritable bladder. See also urgency, urinary incontinence. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: The urge to urinate is difficult to control and can result in embarrassing episodes of incontinence. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Bladder training and pelvic floor exercises are two common and effective treatments for overactive bladder. There are also a number of pharmacologic agents that increase bladder capacity and/or help to coordinate the urinary musculature. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: The need to urinate can be disruptive to the quality of life. Although common in older adults, it is not a normal component of aging. There are physiologic causes of this disorder, and those should be explored.
