A volatile liquid anesthetic agent such as ether is dripped, one drop at a time, onto a porous cloth or mask held over the patient’s face. It is difficult to control the anesthetic depth and pollution of the OR. Chloroform and ether were the major general anesthetics adaptable to open-drop administration.
