anuria /əno͝or″ē·ə/ [Gk, a, ouron, not urine] , the absence of urine production or a urinary output of less than 100 mL per day. Anuria may be caused by a failure or kidney dysfunction, a decline in blood pressure below that required to maintain filtration pressure in the kidney, or an obstruction in the urinary passages. A rapid decline in urinary output, leading ultimately to anuria and uremia, occurs in acute renal failure. Also called anuresis, prerenal anuria. Compare oliguria.
