observation hip, a condition in which a child experiences a limp, pain in the hip, and limited hip motion. So called because it must be “observed” by the clinician, as there is no definitive x-ray or blood test for diagnosis. It resolves spontaneously in approximately 3 to 6 weeks. Also called transient synovitis.
