neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT)

neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT), a broad and ever-evolving neurophysiological rehabilitation approach used to treat persons with central nervous system pathology. Originally the focus was on the inhibition of abnormal tone by using reflex-inhibiting patterns and by facilitating basic movement patterns that occur in an automatic fashion. This treatment is sometimes referred to as the Bobath approach although much of the original Bobath intervention techniques are no longer used. This intervention approach continues to evolve with better understanding of how the central nervous system works. The goal of this intervention is to promote motor learning for efficient motor control in various environments. This is done through specific patient-handling skills designed to facilitate the initiation and completion of specific motor tasks.
