neurilemma /no͝or′əlem″ə/ [Gk, neuron + lemma, sheath] , a layer of cells composed of one or more Schwann cells that forms the segmented myelin sheaths of peripheral nerve fibers. It is necessary for regeneration of peripheral nerves when they have been severed. Also called Schwann’s sheath, sheath of Schwann.
