neural crest

neural crest, the ectodermally derived cells along the outer surface of each side of the neural tube in the early stages of embryonic development. The cells migrate laterally throughout the embryo and give rise to spinal, cranial, enteric, and sympathetic ganglia; pigment cells; Schwann cells; and the adrenal medulla. Also called ganglionic crest, ganglionic ridge. See also neural tube formation.
