National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 1. an institute of the U.S. National Institutes of Health whose mission is to provide national leadership in the understanding, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses through basic research on the brain and behavior, and through clinical, epidemiological, and services research. 2. a division of the Mental Health Commission of Canada that serves as a catalyst for improving the mental health system and changing the attitudes and behaviors of Canadians surrounding mental health issues. NIMH makes recommendations on how best to improve the systems that are directly related to mental health care.
