methanol poisoning, a toxic effect of ingestion, inhalation, or absorption through the skin of methanol (methyl alcohol, wood alcohol) that may impair the central nervous system; cause severe acidosis, blindness, and shock; and result in death. Methanol is found in antifreeze, varnish, and deicing agents. Also called methyl alcohol poisoning.
