mesomerism

mesomerism /mĕsom′erizəm/ , a quantum superposition of wave functions built from several contributing structures (also called resonance structures or canonical forms) as a way of describing the delocalized electronic structure within certain molecules or polyatomic ions in valence bond theory. The term is used when a chemical structure (molecule, transition state) cannot satisfactorily be described by one single Lewis formula.
