measles virus

measles virus, a paramyxovirus (minus sense RNA virus) that is the cause of measles. It is a highly contagious disease that affects mostly children. The measles virus is transmitted by direct contact and respiratory route. Humans are the only target for this virus, and there is no animal reservoir. Symptoms appear 10 to 12 days after the infection and include high fever, bloodshot eyes, runny nose, and body rash. There is no specific treatment available; most people recover in 3 to 4 weeks. An effective vaccine is available and is recommended for all children.
