massive transfusion syndrome

massive transfusion syndrome [L, multus, many, plica, fold, transfundere, to pour through; Gk, syn, together, dromos, course] , a hemorrhagic reaction to massive transfusions of platelet-poor stored blood. For an adult, transfusion of 10 units of blood in a 24-hour period is a massive transfusion. Platelet concentrates and/or fresh frozen plasma may be given to correct the deficiency.
