Martinsen, Kari

Martinsen, Kari, a nursing theorist who proposed a philosophy of caring in reaction to social and health care inequalities and what she considered nursing’s uncritical adoption of science as the basis for nursing. It involves a collectivist vision of humanity in which the individual is dependent upon the community and creation, or nature, and caring rather than control should be the guiding philosophy. As it relates to nursing, caring is simultaneously relational, practical, and moral. Caring involves concrete action based on education and training, without which concern for the patient is mere sentimentality.
