ankle joint [AS, ancleow + L, jungere, to join] , a synovial hinge joint between the leg and the foot. The ankle joint is composed of three bones: the tibia, which forms the inside portion; the fibula, which forms the outside portion; and the talus underneath. The ankle joint is responsible for the up-and-down motion of the foot.
