macular dystrophy, any of a variety of eye disorders that damage the central part of the retina. Several of the disorders are related to gene mutations that affect older adults, including Sorsby’s fundus dystrophy, caused by an excessive growth of blood vessels through the basal membrane, which thickens and bleeds.
