Also called antithymocyte. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is used to prevent rejection of organ transplants and to treat aplastic anemia. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: When this drug is used in renal transplants, life-threatening effects include seizures and anaphylaxis. Other adverse effects include fever, headache, dizziness, weakness, faintness, rash, pruritus, urticaria, wheals, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, chest pain, hypertension, and tachycardia. When the drug is used to treat aplastic anemia, seizures are a life-threatening effect. Other adverse effects include fever, chills, headache, light-headedness, encephalitis, postviral encephalopathy, bradycardia, myocarditis, irregularity, nausea, and abnormal liver function tests.
