amputation care

amputation care, care for a patient who has undergone an amputation; the goal is physical and psychosocial adaptation to the loss. The body part removed will dictate the type of physical care required. Psychosocial recovery can be complex. Interventions require a team approach for successful recovery and rehabilitation. ▪ METHOD: Patients and their families should be fully involved in the plans for rehabilitation, understand what is expected of them, and know the regimen of exercise and skills necessary for full functional recovery.▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: Patients undergoing amputation will need assistance in dealing with changes in body image as they adjust to the loss. They should be encouraged and given the opportunity to express feelings of anxiety, grief, anger, and depression.▪ OUTCOME CRITERIA: A prosthesis may be delayed or immediate, depending on the condition of the patient and the reason for the amputation. Residual limbs are usually wrapped with elastic bandages. Early exercise is encouraged to facilitate full function with a prosthesis.
