hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), any of a group of congenital anomalies consisting of hypoplasia or atresia of the left ventricle and of the aortic or mitral valve or both and hypoplasia of the ascending aorta. It is characterized by respiratory distress and extreme cyanosis, with cardiac failure and death in early infancy.
