amniotic fluid embolism

amniotic fluid embolism [Gk, amnion; L, fluere, to flow; Gk, embolos, plug] , entry of amniotic fluid into the maternal vascular system, usually during labor and delivery. When lodged in a pulmonary vessel, it causes rapid respiratory distress, cyanosis, cardiovascular collapse, hemorrhage associated with severe coagulopathy, and coma. Maternal death is not uncommon and is prevented by rapid total cardiovascular support and treatment of coagulopathy (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, DIC). Now called anaphylactoid syndrome of pregnancy.
