hyperprolactinemia /-prōlak′tinē″mē·ə/ [Gk, hyper + L, pro, before, lac, milk; Gk, haima, blood] , an excessive amount of prolactin in the blood, usually caused by a pituitary adenoma but sometimes caused by endocrine side effects related to certain antipsychotic medications. In women it is usually associated with galactorrhea and secondary amenorrhea; in men it may be a factor in gynecomastia, decreased libido, and impotence. Also spelled hyperprolactinaemia.
