Homans’ sign [John Homans, American surgeon, 1877–1954; L, signum, mark] , pain in the calf with dorsiflexion of the foot, indicating the presence of a blood clot. Although often utilized in a clinical evaluation, it is no longer considered a reliable indicator and should always be supplemented by more conclusive studies if a clot is suspected.
