Hoffmann’s reflex [Johann Hoffmann, German neurologist, 1857–1919] , an abnormal reflex elicited by sudden forceful flicking of the nail of the index, middle, or ring finger, which causes flexion of the thumb and of the middle and distal phalanges of one of the other fingers. It is indicative of pyramidal tract disease above the level of the seventh or eighth cervical and first thoracic vertebrae. Also called Hoffmann’s sign.
