hetastarch /het″əstärch/ , a plasma volume expander. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed to treat hypovolemia in shock and is used in leukapheresis to help increase the yield of granulocytes. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Severe bleeding, severe heart or kidney dysfunction with oliguria or anuria, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse reactions are influenza-like symptoms, muscle pain, edema, and anaphylaxis.
