hard palate

hard palate [AS, heard, hard; L, palatum] , the bony portion of the roof of the mouth, continuous posteriorly with the soft palate and bounded anteriorly and laterally by the alveolar arches and the gums. The hard palate is covered with stratified squamous epithelium and furnished with numerous palatal glands lying between the mucous membrane and the surface of the bone. Compare soft palate.
