Gibson’s murmur

Gibson’s murmur [George A. Gibson, Scottish physician, 1854–1913] , a heart murmur that is heard continuously throughout the cardiac cycle in patients with patent ductus arteriosus. It waxes at the end of systole and wanes near the end of diastole and is often described as a “machinery-like” murmur. It is often accompanied by a thrill. It is usually localized in the second left interspace near the sternum and usually is indicative of patent ductus arteriosus. Also called machinery murmur.
