alveolar microlithiasis, a rare disease characterized by the presence of calcium phosphate deposits in the alveoli and other parts of the bronchopulmonary system. The disease is familial in about half of cases. ▪ OBSERVATIONS: Most individuals are asymptomatic for years. The diagnosis is detected at a late stage, when restrictive lung disease, hypoxia, and pulmonary hypertension are present. Fine, sandlike deposits may cause the entire lung to appear radiopaque on a radiograph. Serum levels of surfactant proteins A and D are also elevated. ▪ INTERVENTIONS: Disodium etidronate has a benefical effect in some patients in regard to tissue calcification. Lung transplantation may be employed in the late stage of the disease. ▪ PATIENT CARE CONSIDERATIONS: Other family members should be screened for the disease. The patient should be monitored carefully as calcium deposits may be found in other organs.
