Gate Control Theory of Pain, a theory first published by Canadian psychologist Robert Melzak (b. 1929) and British neuroscientist David Patrick Walls (1925–2001) in 1962 that posits that nonpainful input closes the gates to painful input, thereby ending transmission of the sensation of pain.
