guanethidine sulfate /gwaneth′idēn/ , a peripherally acting antiadrenergic antihypertensive. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of moderate and severe hypertension. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Heart failure, concomitant administration of monoamine oxidase inhibitors, pheochromocytoma, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. It should be avoided in elderly patients. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are orthostatic hypotension, salt and water retention, bradycardia, diarrhea, and inability to ejaculate.
